How a funny text story gets its laugh

A joke in a chat is a setup the reader sees coming and a last reply they did not. Every story here opens on something dull (a walk update, a plant check-in, a game lobby) so the turn has something to break.

Keep each message short enough to read in a second. In a chat the pause before a reply is part of the timing, so a one-word answer like “WHAT” can be the funniest line in the story.

Where the punchline goes

Save the biggest laugh for the final message and make it a reply, not an explanation. “He says he’s working late” works because the dog walker answers in the dog’s voice, and the reader fills in the rest.

When a story has two jokes, put the smaller one first. In The Plant Sitter, the watered cactus gets a small laugh before the plastic fern gets the big one.

A few quick answers before you jump in.

How long should a funny text story be?

The funny stories here run 14 to 18 messages: long enough to build a joke, short enough that nobody scrolls away before the punchline. Each story page shows how long it plays as a video.

Can I change the names and make it my own?

Yes. Open the story in the maker and every name and message is editable, with a live preview as you type. Swap the pet, the place or the punchline and keep the shape.
