Why chats are perfect for horror

A text conversation only shows what two people choose to type, so the scariest part always happens offscreen. The reader gets the clues one bubble at a time, exactly as the character does.

Ordinary phone details do the heavy lifting: a read receipt, a timestamp, a voice note. Everyone has seen them, so when one is wrong, the reader feels it.

Take away the safe answers, one reply at a time

Good chat horror removes the normal explanations one by one. The fridge could explain the humming, until the humming turns out to be a lullaby. A prank could explain the voice note, until the elevator really does stop between floors.

Choose the ending before the first message, so every clue points at it. The stories here end three ways: a warm ghost (The Second Cup of Tea), a scare that turns into a laugh (Read at 3:12 AM) and an impossible loop (The 9:14 Voice Note).

Frequently asked questions

A few quick answers before you jump in.

Are these scary stories gory?

No. They are written to be creepy rather than violent: nobody gets hurt, and each one ends on a chill or a laugh.

How do I make a text story video feel scarier?

Give the dread room. In the video each message is its own clip with a typing pause before the next reply, and you can change the length of any pause on the timeline, so a long silence before the last message is one drag away.
